Looking for a place to show off your talents? Whether they be singing, reading poetry or participating in a poetry slam, Infusion Coffee and Tea’s open mic night, “The Fuze,” is the only place you’ll be able to do all three in Philadelphia, every second and last Friday of the month and the next chance will be this Friday, February 25.
Doors open at 7:30pm and the Open Mic portion of the evening begins at 8:30 pm. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and the event usually draws about 40 to 50 people.
Following the open mic portion of the evening is the poetry slam, the first adult poetry slam to be held in Philadelphia, hosted by the Slam Master, Sherod Smallman.
While anyone is welcome to participate, slam poetry must be your own work, says Infusion owner Jocie Dye, and must not be accompanied by any music. Poets each have three minutes for their portion of the competition. And according to Infusion’s website, “The Fuze” welcomes all styles, people, and subjects, so there is an opportunity for everyone to perform.
“Anyone can read any poems or perform what they want,” says Dye.
The poets aren’t the only ones who get to participate in the slam, however. Five judges are chosen from the audience and each gives a score to each poet from 0.0 to 10.0, but the highest and lowest scores are dropped, with a maximum possible score of 30. This allows each poet to earn points to compete in “The Fuze’s” finals in May and earn a chance to compete in nationals.
During the month of March, there will be an additional chance to check out “The Fuze”.
“I’m coming out with a book on March 18th,” says Smallman. It will be titled “Journal of an Unemployed Poet” and additional open mic night and poetry slam will be held that night in honor of his book release.
